The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.
