On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a fresh chapter” and an bold start to his tenure.
An Unprecedented Leader
The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Challenges

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
